A governação em África tem sido amplamente caracterizada por uma orientação mais voltada para o pessoal do que para o coletivo. Durante muito tempo, a busca por um modelo de governação eficaz em África, que beneficie o coletivo em detrimento do individual, tem sido uma prioridade. No entanto, o que tem sido observado é a prevalência dos interesses pessoais ou de grupos restritos sobre os interesses comuns.
Um dos principais obstáculos para o desenvolvimento das nações africanas é a demonstração de poder individual ou de grupos específicos, o que tem contribuído significativamente para o atraso no progresso social e econômico. Muitas vezes, regimes ou grupos privilegiados têm buscado perpetuar-se no poder, visando manter suas vantagens e proteção associadas aos cargos governamentais.
Em vez de contribuírem para o avanço da nação, esses líderes muitas vezes acumulam inimigos durante seus mandatos, o que gera um temor de perderem a proteção oferecida pelo cargo. Esse ciclo vicioso tem sido um entrave significativo para o desenvolvimento sustentável em várias sociedades africanas.
Um exemplo claro desse desafio pode ser observado em Angola, onde a democracia ainda está em uma fase embrionária. As instituições democráticas ainda estão se consolidando, enfrentando obstáculos significativos no caminho para a plena realização de um sistema político que represente verdadeiramente os interesses do povo.
Em suma, a busca por uma governação verdadeiramente voltada para o coletivo em África requer não apenas reformas institucionais, mas também uma mudança de mentalidade entre os líderes políticos e a sociedade em geral, visando colocar os interesses comuns acima dos interesses pessoais ou de grupos restritos.
